Yoong wins Superpole to lead Round 9 grid

  • Audi R8 LMS Cup title contenders fill first two rows in Taiwan
  • Rahel Frey and Martin Rump to start from second and third
  • Am Cup pole for Jeffrey Lee at home race

Penbay, October 15, 2016 – Alex Yoong of Audi TEDA Racing Team will start from pole in Round 9 of the Audi R8 LMS Cup after recording the fastest Superpole lap on Saturday at the Penbay International Circuit. Just one-tenth of a second separated the Superpole lap times of the four fastest drivers.

“As we approach the end of the season, tensions are high. There is no room for error as the drivers attempt to stay in championship contention,” said Bernd Goeres, Director of Audi Sport customer racing Asia.

Rahel Frey of Castrol Racing Team and Martin Rump of Champion Racing Team set the pace during both free practice sessions and were able to carry that form into qualifying to clinch second and third positions on the grid for Round 9. While Frey will not be carrying success ballast in the race, reigning champion, Yoong (50 kilogrammes), and Rump (35 kilogrammes) will be weighed down in Round 9 due to their podium positions in the previous race in Korea. Alessio Picariello of MGT Team by Absolute will start from fourth, ensuring that four of the top five in the championship fill out the first two rows.

Despite entering Round 9 in second place overall, Marchy Lee of Team Audi Hong Kong struggled to find his form during qualifying and will start the race from seventh. Ahead of him on the third row are China’s Cheng Congfu of FAW-VW Audi Racing Team and Jan Kisiel of KCMG. The Polish Audi Sport TT Cup champion was second-fastest in the first qualifying session, but was unable to follow up in Superpole and will start in sixth.

In the Am Cup, local hero and classification leader Jeffrey Lee of Team Audi Volkswagen Taiwan took one more step towards the title during qualifying, claiming pole position in the Am Cup. A double-victory on Sunday would secure him the championship in front of his home fans. Competing for the first time in the second-generation Audi R8 LMS, Rick Yoon of Phoenix Racing Asia recorded the second-fastest lap in the class. He will be pursued from the rolling start by the Absolute Racing duo, Johnson Huang and Vincent Floirendo.

Kevin Chen of KCMG will not be able to take part in the Taiwan races as his car sustained considerable damage during a practice session and it will not be able to be repaired in time.

Round 9 will kick off at 10:20 on Sunday, October 16, with Round 10 taking place at 14:00 (all times UTC+8).
